Presentation on AVID:
  • AVID is a national program at the high school level which is a structured series of classes to prepare students to transfer. Designed for students with average to high standardized test score, and average grades. Student participation is voluntary. There is an AVID elective course, trained tutors (ideally from a 4-year college), and collaboration among students based on the Uri Triesman model. AVID emphasizes writing, inquiry, collaboration, and reading. LMC will be the experiment with AVID at the community colelge level. AVID has a much higher percent of Latino AP test-takers than the non-AVID community. Karl Debro’s program at San Leandro high has high enrollments of Latino and African-American students.

  • The first cohort will take Math 25 (T. Rust), English 90 (C. Cook), and the AVID elective (K. Debro).
  • What sort of students do we want to recommend the program to?

Students who can carry 12 units, average grades, and average to high Accuplacer scores. Current Math 12 professors are being asked to recommend students to Karl and Catherine. Karl and Catherine will contact the recommended students.  AVID is not for students with affective issues.

  • Draft of Assessment of Pilot (Outcome, Methods, and Evidence) [J. Stein, F 11/02/07] distributed. Feedback given to Jeannine for a revised draft.
  • The DE committee voted unanimously to ask Jeannine to apply for Title 5 funding for this pilot on behalf of the Math DE program.
