Attendance:
Michael, Poku, Nick K., Myra, Tue, Clint R., Erich, Jeannine, Marcia C.
Announcements:
- Math 900 CAHSEE-prep course outline approved by dept last Wednesday 10/03.
- Michael and Myra, English, and managers attended a SPECC meeting last week on campus about the DE program. Our teaching communities and our assessment distinguish our D.E. program. The SPECC people supported the idea that D.E. needs to be perceived as a program, like the Honors program. New leaders need to be trained, as Nancy and Myra will be transitioning out of D.E. and assessment leadership. We will need job descriptions for these jobs. Our D.E. work seems to be getting more recognition statewide than at LMC (D.E. is not reported on to Governing Board and not listed in our marketing material.). Our managers do not want LMC to be perceived in the community as a remedial school. Basic Skills Initiative groups have been meeting on campus to self-assess precollegiate ed.
- Strengthening Student Success conference:
- Myra presented designing backwards from CSLO’s to final exams to classroom activities. As a result, Myra got many invitations to campuses. What do we see as our role in outreach to other colleges?
- Should we speed up the D.E. program and go for an intense program (like immersion in language acquisition)? E.g. combing a 7.2-week (10 hr/wk) Math 12 and a 10.8-week (10 hr/wk) Math 25; presumably, all students who pass Math 12 would continue into Math 25, and we could eliminate the review in Math 25.
- “Light Your Fire” (Diego Navarro) training – what excites students who end up succeeding? Quantitative literacy, teamwork, statistics projects about social justice issues. Could we do some of this in two or three weeks at the beginning of consecutive courses.
- D.E. Program Review Update is due November 2.
