The East Bay Career Advancement Academy is a program to move young, under-educated at-risk adults into well-paid, career-track jobs.
The Academy, a unique partnership between the two community college and dozens of industry partners and community nonprofits, will train young adults (the target population is between 18 and 30) in basic skills using a career-specific curriculum, while providing them the comprehensive support services they need to be successful. The program is designed to target those who lack the basic skills—reading, writing, math—as well as the ‘soft’ skills people need to get jobs. The Academy will rely on job-skill-based curriculum to teach students basic math and English while at the same time giving them the skills they need to work in one of four high-demand career areas--construction, biotech, health services, and automotive technology.
While many remedial programs slow the material down, this one will ramp it up, seeking to engage and inspire students in the content and in the possibilities for success.
The first set of EBCAA students will begin taking classes in August 2007, and then they will move through the program in supportive communities of about 25 students each.

Expectations of and stipends for faculty
EBCAA contextualizes Math 12 for automotive technology. The faculty who teach the EBCAA cohorts can receive $2000 to develop contextualized curriculum (with assistance from an automotive technology instructor); faculty participate in professional development activities for which they are compensated $250 per activity (about 3- 4 per semester); and faculty are paid at their non-instructional rate when they attend faculty team meetings on campus with the English instructor and counselor assigned to EBCAA classes (to discuss student progress, concerns, EBCAA questions).
Improvements for Fall 2008
The Fall 2008 semester will be the beginning of the second year of this pilot program, and we are continuing to work to improve services to students. As we begin to move forward with recruitment strategies for Fall '08, the EBCAA is developing an EBCAA Schedule of Classes (a booklet) that we can provide to potential students at the various orientations we do at community based organizations. This schedule will allow potential students to make decisions about which campus they will attend and to know the days/time classes are offered. For example, the basic skills/career focus at the various campuses are:
-
LMC and College of Alameda: Automotive Technology
-
DVC, Berkeley City College and Merritt: Allied Health/Social Services
-
Contra Costa College and Laney College: Construction
The East Bay Career Advancement Academy is a one- semester basic skill bridge program leading to a career technical program (certificate); entry level job leading to a career path; or an introduction to college with the two-year degree as a goal. This pilot program is one of three in the state of California. The joint grant between Peralta College District and Contra Costa College District comprise the East Bay Region. The other two regions are the Central Valley (Fresno and surrounding area), and the Southern California region (Los Angeles and others).
