How to Have an Math Lesson Study Experience!!!

Create a cool connection between math and our student's lives

OR

Be cognizant when you see one before your eyes

Video

Julie Von Bergen had lesson study on her mind, so when she was reading ??? and saw this quote

PPT of quote

Video

she thought, "Perfect!"

Keep your eye on the prize,

it's connecting to the students that bring a lesson study alive

Armed with an idea, a couple data tables, and an outline of pedagogy, she told the group about it. We immediately thought it was cool, started analyzing it, and came up with some great suggestions. Most of these Juile could have come with on her own, but that would have taken the group out of the loop!

PPT

  • Plot the cummulative total instead of # of songs produced/year to get better linear correlation
  • Get a hold of large graph paper so students have an easier time plotting data points
  • Write each song on a separate line so students have an easier time reading the table
  • Include your group in the loop Excited as Julie was to find the answser, she realized how much better it'd be if the whole group experienced the analysis. We're all mathies after all! So she spent her time surfing wikis and creating two tables of Dr. Dre's and Timbaland's produced songs and albums, BUT STOPPED THERE and brought her idea to the group.
Synergy + Cool Idea = AMAZING Product

    (i.e. Closure)

Throughout the process, Julie (who could step back since it was her idea) kept pointing out how this was a great lesson study experience.

    PPT

  • Did you see how we adjusted pedagogy and curriculum to help facilitate ease of student understanding?
  • The cummulative total idea was great! This totally helps clarity w.r.t. linear modeling
  • Keep the train  Filled with energy from the four-person group, Julie and Mara happily worked a bit over the weekend to make the enhancements, Tue began work on this webpage, Tue and Mara volunteered to observe the class, and the group decided to have another Friday meeting to debrief!
