Math recommended texts

Page history last edited by Tue Rust 1 mo ago

Textbook requisition forms are due on March 13 for Fall and Summer to the Math Department chair. You will receive blank textbook requisition forms in your box in MA1-141. (Textbook requisition forms will be due in early October for Spring.)

Please remember to put a student text on reserve for students.

This page lists the texts/software recommended by the math department. To order copies for yourself, please contact the publisher.

How to choose textbooks

When you choose the textbooks for your courses, please pay special attention to:

  • the Course Objectives in the course outline,
  • the Student Learning Outcomes (SLO’s) and Common Final Exam Questions (CFEQ’s) for your course, if your course has SLO’s and CFEQ’s.

Some texts do a much better job than others at helping students to achieve the SLO’s and preparing students to do well on the final exam. Our department's list of recommended texts is below.

Supplements

Because many textbooks fail to address some of our departments course objectives, SLO’s, and CFEQ’s, our department has written supplements for Math 25, and Math 30. You may order these from the bookstore to complement the textbook you order. You can review these supplements in the bookstore, or you can talk to  the Math Developmental Education Lead

Assessment reminder

As part of our department's ongoing efforts at course improvement and as part of the college's accreditation, our department has written Common Final Exam Questions (CFEQ’s) for the following courses: Math 9, 12, 15, 25, 25AX, 25BX, 30, 24, and 35. If you are teaching one of the above courses, please use the CFEQ’s as half of your final exam. At the end of the semester, we will ask for (anonymous) copies of student's final exams, so that our department can assess its effectiveness and make necessary improvements. (Note: this departmental assessment is distinct from student grades, which are assigned by you, the professor. This departmental assessment is also distinct from the contractual process for evaluation of instructors.)

Computer-Aided Instruction

If you are planning on using software, (e.g. MyMathLab) as the means for teaching/testing any mastery material, make sure to order the text book with an ISBN number that includes the software as part of the purchasing package. If you are using software other than MyMathLab, be sure to arrange with the Math Department chair to get the required software plug-ins placed on the computers.
