Announcements

  • Math 12 retreat last Friday: check your email for photos of our notes. We spoke about an example of finding patterns in an input-output table. We chose five or six topics to emphasize. Michael and Julie will work on activities over the summer. We spoke about how we might need to focus on the topics that prepare them for Math 25, and perhaps spend less time on arithmetic review that is not necessary for Math 25. Writing LMC Math 12 activities will be a lot of work.
  • Math 25 exam assessment: Tuesday after Memorial Day?
  • Tue learned that he can easily get individual (but anonymous) data on student enrollments and grades in Excel, which he can then use to easily answer a variety of research questions.

Next steps (pursuing grants)

If we had $3 million over the next five years, what would we want to do? Brainstorming:

  • It depends on who is involved. Only faculty who want to change will change.
  • Professional development = faculty inquiry projects. Neither remediation for faculty nor extra credit for faculty.
  • Many levels of professional development, from intense (e.g. lesson study) to mild (e.g. mentoring a few times a semester).
  • Make faculty aware of their success and retention rates.
  • Follow through: professional development needs to be ongoing.
  • Arguing for more tenure-track faculty.
  • Widen assessment to include more faculty's final exams and more faculty, and share results. Assessment of unit exams, so inteventions can be implemented before final exam.
  • Practicing first-day interventions to set up expectations and create a community of learners, increase retention, facilitate group work, confronting preconceptions, getting students' buy-in to SLO's.
  • Faculty-to-faculty mentoring.
  • Modeling of/training in teaching techniques, follow-up assignment, peer observation, and feedback.

Summer plans for getting ready for Fall 2008

  • Finish Math 30 packets.
  • Rewrite Math 25 masery quizzes.
  • Improve tutoring (in class, in lab, in course-specific groups). Friday training.

Culminating celebration/sharing of work associated with SPECC grant? 2:00-5:00 on a Friday afternoon early in the Fall (before 10/13/08). Invite other dept's (Michael will follow up on planning)? Have a separate event for the math dept only?

Set aside a time to discuss Pasedna SPECC grant?
