Announcements

  • Four or five people from LMC will be going to the Basic Skills Initiative (BSI) regional training June 9-10 at CaƱada college. Any volunteers to represent math? If so, please contact Michael.
  • Math 12 retreat this Friday 4:00-7:00.
  • Myra and Richard went to the last SPECC meeting at Stanford last weekend. SPECC will publish a series of articles and produce a website:
    • institutional navigation to build a program (Tom DeWitt at Chabot has leveraged enrollment management to support instituional change. He is also involved in Umojah.)
    • Faculty inquiry
    • assessment and research
    • student engagement
  • Video interviews of faculty involved in teaching communities over the last three years.
  • Newspaper article in New York Times about using symbolic instruction instead of prefacing with concrete examples first: see http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/data/320/5875/454/DC1/1 for more information.

Low student attendance during the second half of this semester

We reviewed "When Capable Students Fail: The Academic Sustainability Gap" at

Next steps (pursuing grants)

If we had $3 million over the next five years, what would we want to do? Brainstorming:

  • It depends on who is involved. Only faculty who want to change will change.
  • Professional deveopment = faculty inquiry projects. Neither remediation for faculty nor extra credit for faculty.
  • Many levels of professional development, from intense (e.g. lesson study) to mild (e.g. mentoring a few times a semester).
  • Make faculty aware of their success and retention rates.

We will talk more about this next week.
