Attendance:
Michael, Tue, Erich, Myra, Julie, Poku, Carol, Pat, Jeannine
Reports
- Bruce Yoshiwara would like us to do a presentation (e.g. on Math 25 assessment) at AMATYYC in Colorado Springs in the first week of June (Myra is unavailable for this one) and in July 10-12 in San Diego. We need to put in a description/proposal by March 15. Tue is interested in June. We need to work out all the funding. New standards = "Beyond Crossroads."
- Santa Barbara presentation by Myra.
- Pasadena presentation by Myra. Interview students on video (e.g. Minerva, Wali, Patty Blevins, want a couple more names). Faculty interviews re: teaching communities, too; Michael will work on this.
Announcements:
- Report back on Math 25 Lesson Study ("Japanese lesson study"). There were two observations and they went well. Conclusions included recommendations that volumes be introduces earlier. Henry and Nick both got a lot out of it.
- Math 15 and Math 18: Students entering in Fall 2009 will need a class one level above Math 25 (e.g., Math 26 or Math 30) in order to get an Associate's degree. Will we continue offering Math 15 and 18?
Math 1 & 2: options, including revision of Accuplacer:
- EE-Tech wants students to be eligible for 12 in order to get into the EE-Tech program, and to take Math 25 (so Math 2 EE-Tech will no longer be necessary). If we phase out Math 2 EE-Tech, we will need to coordinate with Kiran. (Confirmed!)
- Poku checked on the price of the whole book and decided it costs too much. The Math 4 book will work for Math 1 but not for Math 2C and 2VT.
- Recommendation:
- Don't offer Math 1 in Fall 2008 or later
- Don't offer Math 2 in Spring 2008 or later
- Change Accuplacer ASAP so that students will get a recommendation of Math 4, 7, or 9 instead of 1, 2.
- Students who do not finish Math 1 this semester or in Summer 2008 can get an incomplete and finish Math 1 in the Fall.
Next DE meeting: 2008 02-04
