Proposal to increase units
Submitted by Julie Von Bergen, 1/16/08
Objectives:
* Add 1 unit to Math 37 catalog description to make the course 4 units
Reason:
* Per the CSU transfer requirements students need 4 units of Mathematics, so the 3 unit Applied Calculus course as it presently stands is not transferable on it's own and not likely to generate enrollment.
Pros:
*Giving students an alternate path to Statistics as a transfer option, we could attract more students to the Math department.
* The Business department recently created a new AA/AS degree in Business Administration, providing a larger pool of students and possible working with the Business Department. This is an incentive to change now rather than later.
* Potential majors attracted to this class are Business, Economics, Biology and BA Nursing students.
* While some instructors are not able to teach Statistics, all instructors are able to teach Applied Calculus. In the event that students are drawn from Statistics sections, it is a course better suited to our pool of adjunct instructors.
* Julie taught Applied Calculus at SFSU in SP 07 and has some course materials already written and would like to more to put together a small packet of activities to accompany the Hughes-Hallett Applied Calculus textbook. The Hughes-Hallett text was rewritten in 2006 and is quite good (IMO).
* Julie is enthusiastic about this and willing to take on the majority of the work. A second incentive to change now rather than later.
Ideal Situation:
If we are able to brainstorm a temporary way to add on 1 unit to the course or 1 unit of 30-level Math course to be taken concurrently, I would love to try to offer a section of the course in FA08 and drum up enrollment from current Math 30 students and Business AA/AS students. I think after a semester of teaching I could put together enough curriculum to have a small packet and instructor's guide to accompany the textbook. This material could be beta tested by another instructor in SP09 and go live with the 4 unit Math 37 in FA09.
