Spring 2008
Planning
The Math Department plans to offer another series of Statistics retreats this semester.
Possible agenda items (generated at our last retreat) include:
(1) analyzing student work on the CAOS test and the common final exam problem
(2) designing and discussing "statistical literacy" assignments
(3) demonstrating simulations for use in-class to demonstrate core concepts
(4) reading Joan Garfield's article "Teaching Statistics Using Small-Group Cooperative Learning" from the Journal of Statistics Education and sharing "hands-on" activities
(5) sharing effective and fun strategies for introducing the logic of the statistical inference
(6) training on the use of technology for the course (EXCEL, TI-calculators, R, etc.)
If you are interested, please RSVP to Myra by indicating which of the following days/times will work for your schedule this semester: Monday 4-7:00, Wednesday 4-7:00, Friday 4-7:00.
On Monday 1/21, I will send out the schedule for the semester, so please RSVP before that date. Dinner is provided and participants are compensated at their non-instructional rate for each retreat.
Hope to hear from you soon,
Myra
Schedule of retreats
Mark your calendars! Twelve instructors expressed interest in attending this semester’s series of Statistics retreats. Everyone who responded is able to attend on Fridays (though this was not everyone’s first choice), but Mondays and Wednesdays were problematic for some. So here is the schedule. All of the retreats will take place from 4-7:00 in the math conference room. I have suggested agenda items for the first two retreats from the list we generated last semester. The rest of the agendas will be set by participants.
I will send out more detailed information and materials about a week before each retreat. I will ask you to RSVP at that time. Dinner will be provided and participants are compensated at their non-instructional rate.
Hope to see you there!
