Ground rules for the class

What didn't work:  The instructor gave his few classroom expectations (i.e. come prepared, cell phones off, show up on time, stay for the entire period).  Then asked an open question to the class about things that hinder their learning in class or affect their ability to engage or participate in class, or anything they thought should be added to the instructors list. Students were aprehensive about suggesting rules to the class. No suggestions were made by the students.

An alternative (with thanks to Erich Holtmann, and Jennifer Saito):  In groups, have students come up with at least five classroom expectations.  Partition the board so that all the groups lists are up on the board at the same time. Have the class look at them together.  Establish a consensus, looking at things that overlap among their expectation.

Cheating

The LMC student code of conduct specifies your options for disciplining students who cheat. For more information, you can talk to the manager of student services, Art Alatorre (x3121, CC3-444)

One way of preventing cheating on exams is to give two versions of the exam (Form A and Form B), with adjacent students receiving different forms.

You can send your students to the testing room (MA1-107) to take proctored make-up exams.
