The academic senate is an organization whose primary function is to make recommendations with respect to academic and professional matters. The current president of the academic senate is Michael Norris [Jul 2007 - Jun 2008], x3244.

 


 

Academic and Professional Matters

 

  1. Curriculum, including establishing prerequisites and placing courses within diciplines.(primarily relied upon)
  2. Degree and certificate requirements (primarily relied upon)
  3. Grading policies (primarily relied upon)
  4. Educational program development (mutual agreement)
  5. Standards or policies regarding student preparation and success (mutual agreement)
  6. District & college governance structures, as related to faculty roles (mutual agreement)
  7. Faculty roles and involvement in accreditation processes, including self-study & annual report (mutual agreement)
  8. Policies for faculty professional development activities (mutual agreement)
  9. Processes for program review (mutual agreement)
  10. Processes for institutional planning and budget development (mutual agreement)
  11. Other academic and professional matters as mutually agreed upon between the governing board and the academic senate (mutual agreement)

 

The academic senate also

  • assumes primary responsibility for making recommendations in the areas of curriculum and academic standards (primarily relied upon);
  • determines waivers of minimum qualifications / equivalencies for faculty hires (primarily relied upon);
  • develops hiring criteria, policies, and procedures for new faculty members (mutual agreement);
  • makes recommendations regarding administrative retreat rights (primarily relied upon);
  • is consulted by the faculty union before bargaining regarding tenure evaluation procedures;
  • is consulted by the faculty union before bargaining regarding evaluation procedures;
  • is consulted by the faculty union about proposals regarding faculty service areas.
